An erectile dysfunction diagnosis is likely if you are regularly experiencing more than one of these symptoms:

  • Difficulty achieving an erection

  • Difficulty sustaining an erection

  • Decreased sexual desire

What causes erectile dysfunction?

Certain factors have been found to cause ED, such as:

  • Existing medical conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Fatigue
  • Poor blood flow
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Sleep disorders
  • Obesity
  • Smoking tobacco
  • Injuries to the nerves or arteries
  • Drugs and alcohol
  • Medications, such as antidepressants or antihistamines

Are certain people more at risk of getting an erectile dysfunction diagnosis?

Yes, age is the biggest risk factor and the likelihood of erectile dysfunction increases in men over 40.

How common is erectile dysfunction?

It is very common, with a 2019 study finding that global prevalence is between 3–76%. In Canada, it is estimated that 50% of men suffer with the condition.

How can I treat erectile dysfunction at home?

To help reduce the chances of experiencing ED, you can:

  • Maintain a regular exercise routine
  • Limit smoking and drinking alcohol
  • Take measures to reduce stress
  • Seek help for any mental health conditions that could be identified as the cause
  • Ensure there is open communication in your relationship and eliminate any issues which may be contributing to the ED

Is erectile dysfunction serious?

ED itself is not serious, but it can have a serious impact on mental health and quality of life, and point to other more serious medical conditions.

When should I see an online doctor to help?

If you are experiencing regular instances of erectile dysfunction then it is time to consult a doctor.

An online physician can assess your symptoms and if necessary, they may refer you to a specialist or prescribe medication which you can have delivered for free or sent to a pharmacy of your choice for pick-up.

If they feel an in-person appointment is required, this may involve conducting tests:

  • A physical exam focusing on the genitals to test for nerve sensitivity
  • Blood or urine tests to check for evidence of health conditions or low testosterone levels
  • An ultrasound to test for any blood flow issues

How does a doctor treat erectile dysfunction?

Once a diagnosis has been made there are several treatment options available. These include:

  1. Oral medications, such as Viagra, Stendra, and Cialis, designed to relax muscles in the penis and stimulate the blood flow to help with achieving an erection.
  2. Testosterone therapy is an alternative option if you have low testosterone levels.
  3. A penis pump which is placed over the penis to create a vacuum that pulls blood into the penis to achieve an erection. Once you have got an erection you would place a tension ring at the base of the penis to hold in the blood and keep it firm for the duration of the intercourse.
  4. Penile implants. This is a surgical treatment to place inflatable devices into the sides of the penis that are controllable.
  5. If the doctor identifies the issue as being psychological, they may refer you to a psychologist.

How do I prepare for my online appointment?

To ensure the physician can provide an accurate medication prescription during your appointment, you can help by noting down any concerns and answers in advance, along with any allergies they should be aware of.

What will my online appointment be like?

Appointments usually take between five to thirty minutes depending on the individual need. The online doctor will ask for a description of your symptoms. This will allow them to determine the best course of treatment. If necessary, they may recommend a follow-up appointment or a visit to a physical clinic.
