What are lab tests used for?

Lab tests are used to gather information about your health. They help in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of a wide number of conditions, through providing insight into anything that is happening in the body. A doctor may choose to run a lab test in response to any concerns you have raised during the consultation or for a status check on ongoing health issues.

What online lab test referrals are available at Tia Health?

Lab tests that our online doctors can request are:

  1. Blood tests. This involves the removal of blood from your vein using a small, hollow needle. The doctor may need to place a tourniquet (stretchy band) around your arm to locate a strong vein for the procedure. Once the collection tube has been filled with blood, they will remove the needle. The process should be completed in under ten minutes. Blood tests can be used to assess for a variety of conditions, such as cell counts, presence of electrolytes, protein, organ function, and more.
  2. Ultrasounds. This medical test uses high-frequency sound waves to take live images of the inside of the body. Organs, vessels, and tissues can be viewed, all without the use of radiation. The online doctor may request an ultrasound if you describe symptoms such as pain or swelling associated with any organs.
  3. X-rays. This is also an imaging test that is used to view the inside of the body, but this method does use radiation so the doctor will choose to use at their discretion. They may suggest an X-ray to examine a painful area or in the identification of diseases. These can include breast tumors, cancers, digestive problems, broken bones, and more.
  4. Sexual health. There are a variety of tests for sexual health, depending on the symptoms or suspected condition. These include taking swabs, giving blood, providing a urine sample, or having an internal exam. The online doctor will make a recommendation based on your consultation.

If your doctor feels you need a more specialized test, then they can requisition that as well.

How do I get a lab test referral online?

If you feel you need a lab test for any reason, book an appointment with one of our online doctors to discuss your symptoms. If the doctor agrees that you need the test, they will share a requisition form with you.

Complete this form and take it to a lab of your choice to complete the test at a time that suits you.

Once the results are available, your doctor will discuss them with you depending on your individual needs.

If needed, you can book a follow-up appointment with your doctor or book an in-person appointment for further diagnosing.

What will my online lab test appointment be like?

Appointments usually include a discussion of your medical history. The physician will talk with you about your symptoms and reason for the appointment as part of their assessment of whether a lab test is required.

How long do the lab test results usually take?

This varies depending on the lab you choose, and the type of test being done. It can range from days up to a couple of weeks. The medical staff at the lab should share the specific timings with you.

Tia Health doctors' prescriptions are legitimate and are accepted by pharmacies. You can have your prescription delivered for free or sent to a pharmacy of your choice for pick-up.
Yes. Our telehealth platform connects you to a fully licensed Canadian physician. Just like an in-person visit, with telehealth, the doctor is responsible for understanding your case, medical history, and determining the appropriate treatment. If the doctor is not able to help you through telehealth, they may advise that you visit a clinic or hospital in-person.
Your privacy is our top priority, we use bank-level encryption and store data securely in Canada.

Yes! All Tia Health doctors are Canadian licensed physicians. You can verify the status of their license and view their credentials on the College of Physicians website for the province they are licensed. The city and province in which the physician practices is listed on their Tia Health profile which you will see while navigating the booking process.
Yes, we have a variety of doctors, male and female, doctors who speak different languages, and with different specialties.
If you have a family doctor working on the Tia Health platform, they may have telehealth availability. If not, check back soon as we are adding physicians weekly.

Pricing

Telehealth services are covered by the provincial health plans in British Columbia (MSP), Alberta (AHCIP), and Ontario (OHIP) but not currently in other provinces (check back soon as this is changing). Patients with valid coverage in these provinces will not be charged for their telehealth service. Patients in other provinces will receive a receipt that may be reimbursed through a health spending account or other extended/private insurance.
Through our partnership with Focus Mental Wellness, you can talk to a licensed and compassionate therapist via phone, video, or text. Focus therapy services don't require a doctor's referral and are covered by most extended health benefits. Sessions are usually available within a few days, and depending on your selected therapist's availability, same-day sessions are offered.
We accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and other online payment enabled cards.
