Common things known to cause IBS in patients are:

  • The food you eat. Symptoms can be worsened in response to certain foods, such as dairy, citrus fruits, fried foods, and fizzy drinks.

  • Menstruation and the hormonal changes associated with it are a common trigger for women.

  • Finding it difficult to swallow
  • Losing weight
  • Ongoing pain
  • Vomiting

An online physician can assess your symptoms and if necessary, they may refer you to a specialist or prescribe medication. You can have your prescription delivered for free or sent to a pharmacy of your choice for pick-up.

Is IBS serious?

IBS itself is not serious, but long-term symptoms of IBS can have a negative impact on the body. For example, frequent constipation or diarrhea can lead to hemorrhoids.

IBS can also have a damaging impact on quality of life. Research shows that 70% of individuals report that symptoms interfere with everyday life. This can be through missed school, work or social activities and it can prompt frequent feelings of embarrassment, anxiety, or depression.

How does a doctor treat IBS?

Unfortunately, there is no treatment for irritable bowel syndrome, so the goal of treatments is to alleviate symptoms. Treatments can include:

  • Medications designed to control muscle spasms
  • Medications to combat constipation
  • Antidepressants to reduce pain

How do I prepare for my online IBS appointment?

To ensure the physician can provide an accurate medication prescription during your appointment, you can help by noting down any concerns and answers in advance, along with any allergies they should be aware of.

What will my online IBS appointment be like?

Appointments usually take between five to thirty minutes depending on the individual need. The online doctor will ask for a description of your symptoms. This will allow them to determine the best course of treatment. If necessary, they may recommend a follow-up appointment or a visit to a physical clinic.
